President's Biography

John C. Federspiel, PresidentJohn C. Federspiel is President and CEO of Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt Manor, New York, a 128-bed short-term, acute care, not-for-profit facility with an operating budget of $120 million. The Emergency Services Department services 35,000 patients annually, and in 2005 became the first and only "No-Wait ER" in the New York metropolitan region.
John came to the Hospital over twenty-years ago from Saint Mary Hospital in Langhorne, Pennsylvania where he was a Senior Vice President. He has been the recipient of honors and awards, including recognition from the Arthritis Foundation in 2002 and Visiting Nurse Association of Westchester in 2003. In 2004, he received the Local Hero Award. Support Connection honored John with its Quality of Life Award and The American Heart Association presented its Community Service Award to him in 2006. Recognizing his twenty-years of service in 2007, John received the Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce Quality of Life Award and The Paramount Center for the Arts Community Service Award. John was invited to present at the "What's Right in Health Care" Studer Group annual conference in 2007 to demonstrate achievement in patient satisfaction and operation excellence. In 2006, he was an eloquent speaker at the Press Ganey annual conference recognized for most improved employee satisfaction nationwide. John also presented a webinar for Press Ganey in June 2007. After guiding Hudson Valley Hospital Center through a financial turn-around in 1991, he was responsible for doubling the square footage of the Hospital with a new addition, which included an expanded Emergency Services Department, state-of-the-art surgical suites, including a dedicated ambulatory surgery unit, new laboratories, physical medicine, and cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation. Under John's visionary leadership, the Hospital further expanded with a 5,500 square-foot Progressive Care Unit. John is still shaping history with a second major construction project during his tenure as CEO. The Hospital is currently underway with a $100 million major expansion, doubling again the square footage of the Hospital.
John C. Federspiel has been working diligently for the past twelve years making sure that needy children have holiday packages to open. He is the founder of "Santa's Helpers" and is responsible for assisting more than 1,000 children in the Westchester County, New York area with over $75,000 collected in donations with every dollar going directly to gifts for children and their families. He himself shops and wraps presents.
Hudson Valley Hospital Center received recognition from Press Ganey as the winner of their Employee Satisfaction Success Stories Award, and from Forbes® Enterprise Awards as a leader in innovative ideas in the hospital industry. Further honor has been bestowed on the Hospital under his leadership with the coveted MAGNET™ designation for Nursing Excellence. Celebrating the Hospital's growing reputation are further accolades including the Best Place to Have a Baby in 2006 and the Ten Best Places to Work in 2007 by Westchester Magazine. Additional recent recognition of quality measures, clinical ratings and patient satisfaction scores have also been released to consumers on the Hospital Compare website and by the Niagara Health Quality Coalition.
John holds Diplomat status in the American College of Health Care Executives. He has served on numerous State and County healthcare committees in several capacities over the years, including Chairman of Northern Metropolitan Hospital Association (NORMET) and a Vice Chairman of the New York State Hospital Review and Planning Council for seven years. John holds a Master of Business Administration Degree from Temple University. He has three sons, Chris, a graduate of George Washington University; Greg, a graduate of University of Delaware; and Andy, a graduate of University of Mary Washington. John resides in Cortlandt Manor, New York.
